The Huntress... part 2
I must say that I make a deliberate effort not to be your stereotypical 'bush baby' or hunter for that matter. I really do try to break that mould. I want people to look at me and find it hard to imagine me with a .270 savage rifle in my hands.
Yes, living a different lifestyle than your average Joe does make it harder some days... I have these stunning strappy heels but no where to wear them to but on the other hand I just had my cheek exfoliated by a caracal ( I do hope his saliva has some anti-ageing properties too!)
I do not have manicure hands, it is just not practical but I do have bright teal toe nails (to go with those heels if I ever get to wear them!).
I do not wear camouflage underwear or sleep with a knife underneath my pillow, I do not have a crocodile tooth around my neck or alarmingly large muscles!
But I do live in an alternative world from your average city chick! My trendy Aviator sunglasses were chosen mainly to keep the African sun away, floaty dresses also hides the chicken legs and the very white skin that I am so careful to look after, my ever so envied scarves keep the wind out of my hair and Elizabeth Arden is chosen for her sunscreen!
I do not believe that all cooking should be done on an open fire but would much rather serve your wildebeest fillet with a mint and cherry tomato salsa, angel hair pasta and all that on a Maxwell & Williams plate! Or an impala curry, home made chapattis and lingering incense.
But I do believe that you should only kill what you will eat, that you should never let them suffer and that you should only lift a rifle to your shoulder if you are truly sure that you can take a clean shot. I believe you should take a man with to carry it for you and of course to take those photos!
I do believe that you should love the animals in your life with wild abandon, that you should shower them with affection and kisses ( I probably have a very good immune system) and that you should always be silently grateful that they allowed you to share in their lives. I do believe that you should mourn their loss like any other. That you should listen to what they teach you every day.
When they hug you ,you should not let go as you never know when that magic might come your way again, their kisses you should not wipe away ( remember those anti- ageing properties... if they claim that snails have it then anything's possible!)
I do believe that to live close to nature makes us more compassionate…

The Huntress...
Many people frown upon certain things...like hunting. Especially if you are a female hunter!
But how do you sustain a generation of captive bred predators without feeding them, without hunting for them? How do you justify taking them in but not providing them with the food that Mother Nature intended for them?
Then the world also tend to see a female hunter as a women dressed in camo rags, dirt under the nails, harsh wrinkles from the African sun and with hair that has never met a hairbrush.
Well I can tell you that before a hunt I put sunblock on, brush my hair, add a hint of mascara ( a successful hunt might mean photographs) and find anything in my dresser that might not be deemed as too bright.
I also remember the wise words uttered many centuries ago by Kahlil Gibran:
"When you kill a beast say to him in your heart;
By the same power that slays you, I too am slain and I too shall be consumed.
For the law that delivered you into my hand shall deliver me into a mightier hand.
Your blood and my blood is nothing but the sap that feeds the tree of Heaven."
And yes, I do come back with some scratchmarks, rosy cheeks and hopefully dinner but tonight I will be as pretty as any of the other women at the campfire with my vintage jewels, gladiator sandals, a gorgeous sundress.... and a content caracal baby in my lap!

Sweet Surprise
There are few things as exciting as walking past your local flower shop and seeing the first bunches of Sweet peas peeking at you from inside. It took me three trips to get my hands on a bunch and what a gorgeous sight (and smell) to have them in the house!
Wish our whole garden could be covered in sweet peas!

The beauty I see...
Since I started this a few days ago I have really been wondering why am I writing this blog. I am a very private person which makes you think; does blogging really make any sense?
But how do you live in the absolute middle of no-where and still share some of the beauty you see every day: the smell of rain in the dust, fresh veggies from the garden, kisses from a caracal baby, a gorgeous fairy dress in my closet….
Or the sound of jackal at night, the white white frost covering the bushveld in the early morning,a party at the dam with friends or dressing up in those fabulous vintage peep-toes for a night on the town (even when town is many many miles away and those peep-toes would probably only go as far as our patio!)
Some people might ask why I put that super cute caracal picture on my blog… if you were confronted with this every morning would you not want to post it as well??

And God sent his angel to watch over me...
“Some people look at the face of a Lion and they see the lion, whilst other people look at the face of a lion and feel the lion. People with no passion see a lion and it travels from the eyes to the brain. People with passion see a lion and it travels from the eyes to the heart.”
Dennis Roelofs
When you look at this little caracal you see the heart of a lion!

????
Most people write these beautiful blogs about making apple pies and gluhwein for Christmas or very fashionable ones about the latest Jimmy Choo’s and then the mother hens write about their families.
I don’t think mine will be any of those but rather an explosion of what is consuming my life at the time. Be it a gorgeous vintage print, a picture of one of my beloved four pawed creatures, a bit of nostalgia on a winters morning or just a little tale about life in the heart of Africa…
Where has all this beauty gone?
